Manila Condominium Tower faces probe
DMCI Homes, the developer of the Torre de Manila project, had received the necessary permits from former Manila City Mayor Alfredo Lim, amidst protests from various groups, who claimed that the contemporary design and the height of tower violated building restrictions within the vicinity of the Rizal Monument, a national park.
Senator Pia Cayetano, chair of the Senate committee on education, arts and culture, told local media that the single-tower condo could possibly undergo a Senate hearing if existing laws on culture and national heritage were being violated, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.
“Of course, if it has not violated any law, even if I’m not in favour of it, there’s nothing I can do. But our hearings are in aid of legislation. So maybe we need to create laws to ensure that the (national) government also has a say because it may go beyond local concerns,” she said.
An online campaign denouncing the project was launched in two years ago by Filipino cultural activist Carlos Celdran.
The 923-unit resort-inspired condo, which is located on a 7,400 sqm prime plot within the University Belt area in the Philippine capital, is being marketed by DMCI to families, young adults and students, due to its proximity to several educational institutions, hospitals and business centres.
Turnover of the development is scheduled for November 2017.
